Music

Over the years I've been in all kinds of bands. Some information can be found below, as far as is has survived digital decay. Most of these groups were evolving around the same group of people who came, went and returned. So, almost all of these groups are somehow interconnected. I have always enjoyed those people, both during the ups and the downs of bandlife. This page is to remember the good times and to thank those who have allowed me to play with them.

Attica Fades (2016-present)

Attica Fades

Attica Fades is my most recent project. It emerged as Attica in 2016 to be renamed Attica Fades four years later. Together with long time friend Geert Goltstein we make music which is inspired by late seventies art rock, eighties post-punk and nineties alternative. I take care of vocals and play keyboards (piano, organ, some synthesizers) and Geert plays synthesizers and also does programming and production. After releasing several recordings as Attica, which were more electronic oriented, our approach evolved and became more rock oriented around 2020. In this style we released two albums, both of which can be listened to online.

Fat White Bunny (2005-2008)

Fat White Bunny

Fat White Bunny was the succesor to Backbonobo. The guitarist left and in came Dagmar Lap to pick up the microphone. We turned out to be a little less experimental than Backbonobo. This made Fat White Bunny a group exploring the territory between electronica, dance and pop. We actually had something interesting going on, but sadly we differed a little to much in our urge to hit the stage. Eventually Dagmar went to pursue a career in photography and modeling and Joris decided to follow his American girlfriend back to her homeland. So much for the wild years ;-)

Backbonobo (2002-2005)

Backbonobo

Backbonobo was a side step from Human Rites and also a reunion with Joris Kamma who had also been in Blender. We also had long time friend Faber Kroon on guitar.

We experimented a lot with electronics and beats, augmented with bluesy, funky basslines and all kinds of guitar washes, which we compiled on a digital album.

Human Rites (2001-2004)

Human Rites

Human Rites was the second alter ego of Blender. Again consisting of core members Vincent, me, Sjors and Chris. For a while Human Rites and Mean Gasoline existed side by side, but eventually Human Rites was the path we chose to follow.

Under this moniker we developed a heavy dub-style type of reggae. At first with the four of us, later with Chris Muller on vocals, then Emiel Krischer joined us as FOH and dub-mixer, and finally we had Brian, Richard and Marciano joining us on vocals and percusion. We performed quite extensively in our region and made several recordings of which Load of Dub probably was the most full fledged production.

Mean Gasoline (2001-2002)

Mean Gasoline

Mean Gasoline was basically the same group as Blender, but focussing on the blues. The only differences with respect to Blender, were that Joris left for America and Chris took the vocal duties.

It was a very nice experiment but sadly enough it didn't last very long. However, it lasted long enough to allows us to record a CD with close to an hour of steaming blues music.

Blender (1997-2001)

Blender

Blender was the first band in a row of interrelated groups, making all kinds of music. It consisted of Vincent den Hengst (drums), me (bass), Joris Kamma (keyboards), Sjors Branderhorst (Saxophone), Chris Stuart (guitar) and a revolving horde of vocalists and sessionplayers. I have fond memories of them, but there's to many to name them all.

Of course, we were 'young' and 'wild' so we threw all kinds of music together, trying to mix them up (hence the name!). We recorded virtually all of our rehearsals, ending up with hundreds of tapes with great music, weird jams and late night banter. Our saxophone player probably still owns them. A little more comprehensive was a live recording made by Dwergpop.

Aardvark (1994-1996)

Aardvark is the common denominator for all kinds of less serious recordings I've made with long time friend Faber Kroon. Sadly, these were made on old music cassettes that never made it into the digital age. They are probably still somewhere between my old rubbish, but I haven't seen them in years. Whenever I come across them I will try to convert them and upload some of them.

Human Stupidity (1993-1994)

Human Stupidity was the first more serious band I took part in during my high school years. It was during the early nineties, and being kids of our time we were doing sort of a grunge thing. I can't remember all their names, but Martijn Verhagen was one of them. With him I wrote sort of a rock opera which we performed at school as part of our final exams.

Afval (1992-1993)

Afval (Garbage in Dutch) was my first band, of which I wouldn't even know exactly when it took place. We were desperately trying to do the metal-punk-DIY kind of thing, with very interesting results. Although it probably was hardly listenable, we actually made it to the stage once.
